Tooth Extractions – Denham Springs, LA
An extraction is the removal of a tooth or teeth. We strive to save teeth, but if a tooth is not savable it will need to be removed. There are many different factors to consider when an extraction is an option.
During your initial consult and diagnosis for your tooth, we may start you on an antibiotic. For added comfort, some patients decide to take oral sedation medicine to diminish anxiety. The visit will start by administering dental anesthesia around the area to ensure numbness. Instruments will be used to remove the tooth from the socket. We will then determine if sutures are needed. Proper care instructions will be given at this time.
Often during an extraction, bone graft will be placed. Bone grafting is a highly successful procedure. It is also a preferable alternative to having missing teeth, diseased teeth, or tooth deformities. Bone grafting can increase the height or width of the jawbone and fill in voids and defects in the bone. In many cases, bone graft is placed to preserve the bone in order to place a future implant, dentures, partials or bridges. There are essentially two basic ways in which bone grafting can positively impact the health and stability of the teeth.
Bone grafting stabilizes and helps restore the jaw foundation for restorative or implant surgery. Deformities can also be corrected and the restructuring of the bone can provide added support.
Bone grafting can be used to limit or prevent bone recession following a tooth extraction, periodontal disease, or other invasive processes.
If the doctor and patient agree that a graft is needed, during the time of the extraction, the graft will be properly placed into the socket and a collagen membrane will be placed over the top to help the spread of bacteria into the new bone. Sutures will be placed over the top and will need to be removed two and a half weeks after the procedure. We will remove the sutures, evaluate healing and use a medicated rinse to thoroughly clean around the site.
